1. What is a Hora in Vedic Astrology?

In Vedic astrology, a Hora is an astrological planetary hour ruled by one of the seven classical planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn. Rather than a fixed 60-minute clock hour, a Hora is determined by dividing daylight (sunrise to sunset) into 12 equal segments, and nighttime (sunset to sunrise) into 12 equal segments.

The word Hora derives from the Sanskrit word Ahoratra (meaning day and night), taking the middle syllables. In electional astrology (Muhurat), computing local Hora timings allows you to identify favorable windows during the day for specific actions based on prevailing planetary influences.

2. How Day Hora and Night Hora Durations Shift

Because sunrise and sunset times shift with latitude, longitude, and seasonal progression, the length of a Hora varies throughout the year. During summer months, daytime Horas extend beyond 60 minutes while nighttime Horas shorten. In winter months, night Horas stretch longer while daytime hours contract.

Accurate Hora computation requires precise astronomical sunrise and sunset calculations for your specific location. Our engine calculates these daylight and nighttime proportions to provide exact start and end times for every window.

3. The 24-Hour Planetary Sequence

The sequence of planetary hours follows the traditional astronomical speed of the planets, ordered from slowest orbital movement to fastest: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Moon.

The first Hora at sunrise is always ruled by the planet governing that weekday. Sunday starts with Sun Hora, Monday with Moon Hora, Tuesday with Mars Hora, Wednesday with Mercury Hora, Thursday with Jupiter Hora, Friday with Venus Hora, and Saturday with Saturn Hora.

After sunrise, subsequent hours step backwards through the speed order. On Sunday, Sun Hora is followed by Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. This cycle runs continuously through 12 day hours and 12 night hours. By the end of Sunday night, the 24th hour finishes on Mercury Hora, leading directly into Moon Hora at sunrise on Monday. This sequence is how the days of the week were named.

4. Selecting Horas for Business, Property, Travel, and Health

Matching specific tasks to ruling planetary hours improves efficiency and clarity:

Business and Finance: Jupiter and Mercury Horas are best for signing contracts, negotiating sales, and opening bank accounts. Mercury handles detailed paperwork and calculations well, while Jupiter supports expansion and long-term partnerships.

Property and Real Estate: Use Sun Hora for signing deeds and legal registrations. For site visits or structural inspection, Saturn Hora provides realistic assessment and steady grounding.

Travel: Moon and Venus Horas favor short trips, social visits, and commercial travel. Long journeys started during Venus Hora tend to be comfortable. Avoid starting long trips during Mars or Saturn Horas to minimize delays.

Healthcare and Recovery: Scheduling medical appointments or starting treatments works well during Sun and Jupiter Horas. Sun Hora supports physical vitality, while Jupiter Hora favors medical advice and recovery plans.

5. Combining Horas with Choghadiya and Panchang

For best results, check active Hora timings alongside Choghadiya and Panchang windows. When a favorable Hora (such as Jupiter or Venus) coincides with an auspicious Choghadiya (such as Shubh, Amrit, or Labh), the window is particularly favorable for major initiatives.
