In Vedic astrology, a Hora is an astrological planetary hour ruled by one of the seven classical planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn. Rather than a fixed 60-minute clock hour, a Hora is determined by dividing daylight (sunrise to sunset) into 12 equal segments, and nighttime (sunset to sunrise) into 12 equal segments.

The word Hora derives from the Sanskrit word Ahoratra (meaning day and night), taking the middle syllables. In electional astrology (Muhurat), computing local Hora timings allows you to identify favorable windows during the day for specific actions based on prevailing planetary influences.

Because sunrise and sunset times shift with latitude, longitude, and seasonal progression, the length of a Hora varies throughout the year. During summer months, daytime Horas extend beyond 60 minutes while nighttime Horas shorten. In winter months, night Horas stretch longer while daytime hours contract.

The first Hora at sunrise is always ruled by the planet governing that weekday. Sunday starts with Sun Hora, Monday with Moon Hora, Tuesday with Mars Hora, Wednesday with Mercury Hora, Thursday with Jupiter Hora, Friday with Venus Hora, and Saturday with Saturn Hora.

After sunrise, subsequent hours step backwards through the speed order. On Sunday, Sun Hora is followed by Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. This cycle runs continuously through 12 day hours and 12 night hours. By the end of Sunday night, the 24th hour finishes on Mercury Hora, leading directly into Moon Hora at sunrise on Monday. This sequence is how the days of the week were named.
