Principles of Vedic Timekeeping in New Delhi

Vedic timekeeping is based on local sunrise and sunset in New Delhi, India rather than standard clock time. Because sunrise depends on latitude (28.61°N) and longitude (77.21°E), every city has its own calculation boundaries. The daily calendar, known as a Panchang, calculates five astronomical factors: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (soli-lunar combination), Karana (half-tithi), and Vara (weekday).

Checking Panchang timings helps determine the quality of different hours in the day for work, travel, ceremonies, and fasting schedules in New Delhi. You can verify solar timings using our Sunrise Sunset Calculator and explore active lunar phases with our Tithi Calculator.

Tithi Calculation and Lunar Days

A Tithi is a lunar day, defined by the angle between the Sun and Moon. When the Moon advances 12 degrees relative to the Sun, a new Tithi starts. Because the Moon moves faster near perigee and slower near apogee, a Tithi can last anywhere from 19 to 26 hours.

The lunar month contains 30 Tithis across two fortnights. Shukla Paksha covers the 15 waxing Tithis up to the Full Moon, while Krishna Paksha covers the 15 waning Tithis ending with the New Moon. Certain Tithis are traditionally chosen for constructive work, while others are preferred for reflection, clearing debts, or spiritual discipline. Track lunar day transitions using our Tithi Calculator.

Nakshatra of the Day and Lunar Mansions

A Nakshatra is the star constellation the Moon occupies during its 27-day orbit around Earth. The 360-degree zodiac is divided into 27 equal Nakshatra sectors of 13 degrees and 20 minutes each. The Nakshatra present at sunrise sets the tone for the day.

Each Nakshatra is linked to a ruling planet and deity in classical texts. Auspicious Nakshatras like Pushya, Rohini, or Uttara Phalguni are chosen for commercial starts and long-term commitments, while sharp Nakshatras like Mula or Ardra are used for competitive efforts and research. Find your birth star and planetary ruler with our Nakshatra Calculator.

Yoga of the Day

The daily Yoga measures the combined longitudinal movement of the Sun and the Moon. It is calculated by adding the celestial longitude of the Sun to that of the Moon, then dividing by 13 degrees and 20 minutes to produce one of 27 Yogas.

In Vedic astrology, Yogas describe general atmospheric harmony. Auspicious Yogas like Siddhi, Shiva, and Sadhya are considered favorable for team projects, studies, and business agreements, whereas Yogas like Vyatipata and Vaidhriti call for extra patience in communication. Explore planetary combinations with our Kundli Calculator.

Karana and Practical Work Efficiency

A Karana is half of a Tithi, equal to 6 degrees of angular distance between the Sun and Moon. Each lunar month contains 60 Karanas, using 11 named types that repeat in sequence.

  • Movable Karanas: Seven movable Karanas cycle through the month: Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, and Vishti. They correspond to dynamic and day-to-day practical activities.
  • Fixed Karanas: Four fixed Karanas occur once per month near the New Moon: Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, and Kintughna. They are traditionally used for land-related tasks, study, and religious rituals.
  • Bhadra (Vishti): The Vishti Karana, also called Bhadra, requires careful handling. Traditional practice avoids starting travel or signing contracts while Bhadra is active.

Rahu Kaal and Abhijit Muhurta Windows

Daily planning in New Delhi involves balancing favorable and unfavorable windows throughout the day.

Rahu Kaal is a 90-minute period each day associated with Rahu. It is calculated by dividing daytime (sunrise to sunset) into eight equal parts and assigning one part based on the weekday. In traditional practice, important meetings, new purchases, and journeys are avoided during this window. Check your local times on our Panchang Calculator.

Abhijit Muhurta is an auspicious 48-minute period around midday, centered on solar noon in New Delhi. In Vedic astrology, it is considered an effective time to start new work, sign agreements, or initiate travels when other favorable times are not available. Find suitable hours on our Choghadiya Calculator.
