The mathematical procedure for finding Upapada Lagna uses sign distances from the twelfth house to its planetary ruler. Here is the exact formula used by the engine:
Step 1: Identify the twelfth house and its ruling lord
The twelfth house is the sign immediately preceding your birth Ascendant (Lagna). For example, if your Lagna is Cancer, your twelfth house is Gemini, which is ruled by Mercury.
Step 2: Count the inclusive distance from the twelfth house to its lord
Count the number of zodiac signs from the twelfth house to the sign where the twelfth lord sits in your birth chart. Count both the starting sign and the ending sign in this total (inclusive counting).
Step 3: Project the count forward from the lord's placement
Count the exact same distance forward from the sign where the twelfth lord sits. The resulting sign is the raw Arudha Pada of the twelfth house.
Step 4: Check for classical Jaimini exceptions
In classical Jaimini rules, a house pada cannot sit in the source house itself (the 1st from source) or in the direct opposite sign (the 7th from source). When this occurs, adjustment shifts apply based on your selected calculation method:
- 1st house exception (Swasthe Daraha): If the raw pada lands in the twelfth house, shift 10 signs forward from the twelfth house.
- 7th house exception (Sutre Ripuh): If the raw pada lands 7 signs away from the twelfth house, shift 10 signs forward from the calculated sign (which equals 4 signs forward from the twelfth house).
Step 5: Identify the Upapada Lagna Lord and the sustenance house
Once the final sign is established, its planetary ruler is your Upapada Lagna Lord. Counting two signs forward from Upapada Lagna identifies the second house of marital sustenance.
