In authentic Vedic astrology (Jyotish), Sage Parashara introduced Ashtakvarga in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra to evaluate the exact functional strength of planets and houses (Bhavas). The Sanskrit word Ashtakvarga means "eight-fold division," referencing the eight reference vantage points used in calculation: the seven major planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) and the natal Ascendant (Lagna).

While standard birth chart interpretations look primarily at sign dignities, exaltation, and aspects, Ashtakvarga provides an objective point scoring system. Favorable points are known as Bindus, while unfavorable units are termed Rekhas. This numeric model allows you to judge with certainty when planetary transits (Gochar) and active Vimshottari Dasha periods will produce smooth results or encounter friction.

Ashtakvarga calculations are organized into two primary diagnostic views:

• Bhinna Ashtakvarga (BAV): The individual point matrix calculated for each of the 7 classical planets across all 12 zodiac signs. Each planet has a maximum score of 8 points per sign. A score of 4 or higher indicates a supportive transit placement.
• Sarvashtakvarga (SAV): The composite matrix summing the individual BAV points of all 7 planets across each sign. The entire zodiac equals exactly 337 total bindus. The classical benchmark average per sign is 28.08 points.

One of the most practical predictive techniques in Ashtakvarga is the Kakshya System. Each 30-degree zodiac sign is divided into 8 equal subdivisions of 3 degrees and 20 minutes (3° 20'), ruled in fixed sequence by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, and the Ascendant (Lagna).

When a planet transits through a Kakshya whose ruler contributed a bindu in that planet's BAV chart, the planet produces favorable results during those exact days. If the Kakshya lord contributed 0 bindus, that specific week often brings brief delays regardless of overall sign strength.

To evaluate longevity, wealth, and core strength, classical texts apply two mathematical reduction procedures (Shodhanas) to raw BAV scores:

• Trikona Shodhana (Trinal Reduction): Compares bindu scores across the four elemental trine groups (Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius; Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn; Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius; Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) and subtracts the minimum value from all three signs in each trine.
• Ekadhipatya Shodhana (Dual Lordship Reduction): Applied to pairs of signs owned by the same planet (e.g., Mars owning Aries and Scorpio, Mercury owning Gemini and Virgo) when unoccupied, eliminating redundant scores to derive refined Net Pinda values.

Ashtakvarga offers clarity when evaluating slow-moving planetary transits:

• Saturn Transit (Sade Sati): When Saturn transits your natal Moon sign and adjacent houses with 30 or more SAV points, Sade Sati often brings professional advancement and durable stability rather than disruption. Low SAV points (< 25) highlight phases that require careful pacing.
• Jupiter Transit (Guru Gochar): When Jupiter transits a sign where its own BAV score is 5+ points and the SAV score is 30+, major career growth, marriage timing, and financial expansions are supported.
• Rahu and Ketu Transits: Transits through houses with high SAV scores keep nodal volatility constructive and purposeful.
